February 2010 marks the 40th anniversary of the Saskatoon Aquarium Society.
It began as a group of eleven people who decided to form a club dedicated to the aquarium hobby. The first meeting took place in February 1970, and was held in a private home. Before long, a more formal meeting time and place was established.
The Bessborough Hotel was chosen as its first location. Meetings were held on the last Sunday of each month at 1:30 p.m. By autumn of the same year, a constitution had been proposed and accepted. The Nekton (our quarterly Publication) and the Breeder's Award Program were started; a club library was established. In early 1973, the club had to find a new meeting place. For a short time, it was based at the downtown library. The next move was to St. Thomas Moore College, where it remained for the next 16 years.
The first Public Home Show was held in 1977. The tradition continues until present with Home Shows each year and Public Shows every two years.
In March 1989, the club moved the meeting site to St. Timothy's Church Hall. This was the steady location until late 2009, when St. Timothy's Church changed ownership. The meetings are now held at Faith River Church 2625 Preston Avenue South at 2:00 p.m., on the last Sunday of each month.
The club is very active, with both guests and regular members attending. Along with the very successful auction, there is usually a guest speaker presenting a variety of aquarium hobby topics. The club is a colourful one, with members specializing in many aspects of the hobby. We are currently in an expansion phase. Our new Website/Forum has been launched, and the number and diversity of hobbyists who attend is growing. This is an exciting time for old and new members alike. Come down and check us out! We welcome any Aquarium Hobbyist to join! It's a great way to meet others in the hobby and to make new friends who share a common interest.
